Blancpain Flyback
JB Blancpain
When it comes to the world of luxury timepieces, few names resonate with the same heritage and prestige as Blancpain. Established in 1735, Blancpain is recognized as the oldest watchmaking brand in the world. The Legacy of Blancpain’s storied history is marked by a series of innovations that have significantly influenced the watchmaking industry. The brand is renowned for its dedication to watches, famously declaring that it would never produce a quartz watch. This commitment has led to the creation of some of the most intricate and revered mechanical movements in the world. From pioneering the modern diving watch with the Fifty Fathoms in 1953 to creating ultra-slim movements and grand complications, Blancpain's influence is profound and enduring. If you're considering adding a Pre-owned Blancpain to your collection, exploring their exquisite range of watches is a journey into timeless excellence.
The Leman Flyback
Among Blancpain's impressive collection, the Leman series stands out as a paragon of elegance and technical prowess. Named after Lake Geneva (Lac Léman) near the company's headquarters, the Leman collection embodies a perfect blend of classic design and modern functionality. The Leman Flyback, in particular, is a testament to Blancpain's innovative spirit. This timepiece features a flyback chronograph complication, allowing the wearer to reset and restart the chronograph with a single push of a button—an invaluable feature for pilots and sports enthusiasts.
Gray & Sons - Leading Blancpain Service Center
At Gray & Sons, we recently had the pleasure of servicing a remarkable timepiece, the 40mm Blancpain Leman Flyback Ref. 2885F. This luxurious watch, known for its design and technical prowess, came to us in need of expert care. Here’s a behind-the-scenes look at the process our Master Watchmaker follows to restore such an intricate timepiece.
Initial Inspection and Disassembly

Our Master Watchmaker begins by carefully disassembling the pre-owned Blancpain Leman Flyback, examining each component to assess its condition. This intricate movement includes wheels, pinions, the dial, hands, screws, balance wheel, mainspring, and the winding system. Each part is organized and prepared for cleaning.

Cleaning Process
All the disassembled parts are organized and placed into a series of small baskets. This careful separation ensures that each component is protected from damage during the cleaning process. These smaller baskets are then placed into a larger basket, which is subsequently inserted into our cleaning machine. The cleaning machine subjects the parts to a 45-minute cleaning cycle through four solvent liquid solutions. This thorough process effectively dissolves old oil and removes any accumulated dust and dirt, ensuring that every component is pristine and ready for reassembly.
Reassembly and Lubrication
After the cleaning cycle, our Master Watchmaker retrieves the parts, ensuring they have been thoroughly cleaned. The reassembly process then begins, with each part carefully put back together and every screw precisely placed. During this stage, each component is relubricated to minimize friction and ensure smooth operation. The mainspring, the power source of the watch, is wound and placed back into the barrel. This crucial step ensures that the watch will have the necessary power to function correctly.

Regulation and Timing
Once the movement is reassembled, the watch is placed in our amplitude machine. This machine is used to regulate the timing, ensuring that the mechanism runs accurately and keeps time precisely. Our Master Watchmaker meticulously adjusts the movement to meet the highest standards of performance.

Case Polishing and Preparation
While the movement is being regulated, our Polisher carefully polishes, details, and cleans the case, preparing it to receive the movement. This step restores the case to a like-new luster, enhancing the watch's aesthetic appeal. The case is then sealed with gaskets, and the strap is installed, ready to receive the movement.

Final Assembly and Testing
To complete the service, the watch undergoes a water resistance test. It is placed into our waterless pressure tester to ensure that it can withstand various environmental conditions without compromising its functionality.
