Breguet 5447PT Minute Repeater Perpetual Complication

In 2005, Breguet unveiled the Classique Grande Complication reference 5447PT/1E/9V6 Perpetual Calendar Minute Repeater at the Baselworld watch fair. As denoted by the “PT” letters in its reference number, this particular edition is crafted in platinum (Breguet does offer other variants in rose gold and white gold). This platinum Breguet watch is paired with a black alligator leather strap, complete with a platinum deployant clasp. 

The platinum case measures 40mm, which is a remarkably restrained size given all the complications of the watch. In true Breguet fashion, the case is decorated with fine fluting on the sides while the slim bezel makes way for more real estate on the dial. Similar to many Breguet fine timepieces, the silvered gold dial of this Classique Grande Complication 5447 is intricately decorated with several guilloche patterns, hand-engraved on a rose engine. There are so many details to take in that it’s completely natural to see something new each time you glance at the dial. 

Along with the characteristic blued Breguet hands (also known as pomme hands) and Roman numerals on the outer chapter ring, the dial is also home to a moon phase indicator at 1:30, the day display at 4, the date display at 6, the leap year subdial at 8, and a retrograde month display spanning from 9 to 12. Despite all the sub-dials and hands, the dial remains delightfully balanced and not crowded. What’s more, as a perpetual calendar watch, the Breguet Classique Grande Complication 5447 will continue to correctly indicate the time and date (as long as it keeps running) until the year 2100 without needing the wearer to make any adjustments. 

In addition to the already impressive perpetual calendar complication, the Breguet 5447 also boasts a minute repeater complication. The minute repeater is activated by a slide piece on the left side of the case, which will strike the hours, quarters, and minutes, on two different gongs. If, for instance, it’s 10:54, activating the minute repeater will chime 10 strokes on the first gong (for the hours), three double strokes on both gongs (for the quarters), and nine single strokes on the second gong (for the minutes past three-quarters).
