Best Watches Spotted at the Oscars 2020
It was an uncharacteristically wet Sunday in Los Angeles for the 92nd Academy Awards but that didn’t stop the biggest stars from attending Hollywood’s biggest night. Despite the rainy red carpet, everyone came in their best formal outfits, including some awesome luxury watches. Following our watch spotting at the Globes, Critics’ Choice, SAGs, and Super Bowl, here are the best watches spotted at the Oscars 2020.
Karl Schmid’s Rolex Explorer
ABC News correspondent Karl Schmid took his familiar spot on the Oscars red carpet to interview film stars as they made their way to the Dolby Theatre on Hollywood Boulevard. As he was speaking to all the A-list celebs about their nominations or predictions for the night, we couldn’t help notice his Rolex watch peeking out from his tuxedo cuff. It was a stainless steel Rolex Explorer with the characteristic 3/6/9 black dial and matching steel Oyster bracelet. This perfectly illustrates that a Rolex sports watch can be paired with just about any look, including formalwear.
Antonio Banderas’ Bulgari Octo Finissimo Automatic
Nominated in the Best Actor category for his role in the movie Pain and Glory, Antonio Banderas stepped out onto the Oscars red carpet in a classic black tux. And underneath his sleeve was a Bulgari watch. The actor’s pick was the ultra-thin Bulgari Octo Finissimo Automatic with a black sandblasted ceramic case and matching ceramic bracelet and dial—a great monochromatic luxury watch for the formal affair.
Mark Consuelos’ Vintage Rolex Daytona
Actor Mark Consuelos walked the Oscars 2020 red carpet in a navy blue tux with a black lapel and bowtie. Of course, he was with his wife, Kelly Ripa, who is in LA to host “Live’s After Oscar Show” with Ryan Seacrest, which takes place bright and early on Monday morning following Oscar Sunday. Kelly Ripa calls Mark Consuelos and Ryan Seacrest her “two husbands” so it’s only fitting that they both wear vintage Rolex Daytona chronographs! Mark Consuelos opted for a fantastic yellow gold vintage Rolex Daytona while Ryan Seacrest wore his favorite stainless steel Daytona ref. 6263 “Big Red.”
Taika Waititi’s Panerai Luminor
It was a big night for New Zealand filmmaker Taika Waititi, who went home with his first Academy Award this year, winning Best Adapted Screenplay for his film, Jojo Rabbit. For the 202 Oscars, he paired his traditional black tuxedo with a Panerai watch. It was a stainless steel Panerai Luminor –characterized by the signature crown-protecting bridge—with a blue dial and leather strap. Panerai may be an unconventional choice for black tie given the watch’s large size and sporty look, yet as Taika Waititi shows us, it’s a great combo.
Spike Lee’s Rolex GMT-Master
Academy award-winning director, Spike Lee, paid tribute to late NBA player and fellow Oscar winner Kobe Bryant by wearing a custom purple and yellow suit with the number 24 emblazoned on the lapels and back. On his wrist, Spike Lee wore the new 18k Everose gold (Rolex’s proprietary rose gold alloy) Rolex GMT-Master II with the black and brown ceramic bezel.
Rami Malek’s Cartier Pasha
Rami Malek won the Best Actor Oscar last year for his portrayal of Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody. So as is tradition, he was on hand at this year’s Oscars to present the award for Best Actress. Rami Malek opted for a classic Cartier watch to go with his black tuxedo and black shirt look. It was a yellow gold Pasha watch on a black leather strap, which was an intriguing choice since Cartier no longer makes this collection. But thankfully, for fans of the Gerald Genta-designed Cartier, the Pasha watch is still widely available in the pre-owned market.
Elton John’s Franck Muller
Not only did Elton John perform “(I’m Gonna) Love Me Again” from the movie Rocketman at the Oscars, the superstar also won Best Original Song with his writing partner, Bernie Taupin minutes after his performance. A longtime fan of Franck Muller watches, Elton John wore dazzling diamond Franck Muller watch to complement his jazzy purple suit jacket and pink sunglasses.
Mindy Kaling’s Audemars Piguet
Although comedian and actress Mindy Kaling did not wear a watch to the Academy Awards, choosing an extravagant diamond necklace as her main accessory she did slip one on later for her outfit at the post-Oscars Vanity Fair party. Mindy Kaling went full sparkle yet again with her watch, donning a fantastic diamond-set Audemars Piguet Royal Oak watch.
Some other notable watches we spotted at the Oscars 2020 included Saturday Night Live cast member Colin Jost’s Tag Heuer Monaco, rapper Eminem’s engraved yellow gold Rolex Datejust, actor Josh Gad’s two-tone Chopard Alpine Eagle, actor Adam Driver’s Breitling, comedian Sebastian Maniscalco’s Panerai Luminor, and former NFL player and television host Michael Strahan’s gold Rolex President Day-Date.
That wraps up our best watches at the Oscars 2020 feature; we’re happy to see so many great watches out in the wild! If you’re looking for your own red-carpet-worthy luxury watch, don’t miss our vast collection of pre-owned fine timepieces right here at Gray & Sons.
