Caring For Diamond Jewelry

ARTICLE DATE 07/13/2017

Diamonds make for one of the most resilient and precious natural substances of Earth. We’re drawn to them, we admire them, and yet, often forget how to care or them. Fleming got it right – diamonds really are forever. But what can we do to make sure that rings true? As tough as they are, everyday wear and handling can take a toll on diamond jewelry. So, here are some tips to keep your diamond jewelry lasting for years to come. We’re sure that anyone can follow these guidelines and hope they help you maintain your diamond jewelry.

Cleaning

Cleaning diamonds is as easy as soaking them in water mixed with a few drops of dish soap. It sounds simple, but the GIA recommends doing this once or twice a week. After that, you can use a new, soft-bristle toothbrush to gently scrub away any dirt or grease. Remember, only use a toothbrush that is fresh out of the packaging that has only been used for diamond cleaning.

Look…Try Not To Touch

Our skin produces oils that can tarnish or work abrasively on a diamond. Constantly touching diamonds unnecessarily can dull them and result in a cloudy look that builds over time. Try your best to remove and put on your jewelry without totally touching the diamonds. This way, you can minimize the amount of grease they come in contact with and make cleaning easier.

Avoid Harsh Chemicals

Don’t ever use harsh chemicals like chlorine to clean your diamonds. This can cause disastrous results and leave your jewelry in worse shape than before. Use only a mild solution of water and dish soap or choose a dedicated cleaner from your local jeweler. A little goes a long way, and you don’t need to nuke your diamonds with harsh chemicals to care for them.

Be Gentle!

If you haven’t figured it out by now, just know that this is key. From scrubbing to soaking, gentle cleaning and handling ensures that stones remain in their settings. Also, while on the topic of loose stones, be sure to have a jeweler inspect for those before resorting to an ultrasonic cleaner. They can be great for removing encrusted dirt, but you don’t want loose stones to be lost in the process.
