In 2019, Patek Philippe unveiled a surprising release in the form of the Calatrava Weekly Calendar reference 5212A. Not only is this Calatrava watch made in stainless steel, a rare metal for that particular Patek model, but it also features a novel complication that displays the time, day, date, and number of the week in the year. However, what makes this example even more collectible is that it includes a Tiffany stamped dial, signifying that it was retailed by Tiffany & Co. Watches that are double-stamped with Tiffany & Co. logos are coveted among collectors, particularly Patek Philippe ones. Read on as we review all the details of this Patek Philippe Calatrava Weekly Calendar 5212A Tiffany Dial.

The stainless steel case of the Patek Philippe Calatrava Weekly Calendar 5212A watch measures 40mm in diameter and 10.79mm thick – a versatile size that fits a wide range of wrist sizes. The lugs feature a two-step design, which is a subtle vintage touch on an otherwise modern timepiece. Adding to the comfort of the watch is the supple light brown calfskin strap with white stitching, furnished with a steel prong buckle.

As handsome as the case and strap are, the star of the show here is the dial. The first thing you’ll notice is the unique typography, based on one of the watch designer’s handwriting and printed in black. According to Patek Philippe, this choice of font is meant to remind us of the days when writing in paper diaries was still the norm.

The silvery opaline dial is home to five hands at the center. The Dauphine-style hands indicate the hours and minutes while a slim counterbalanced hand marks the seconds. The short hammer-shaped hand with a red tip points to the day while the longer one points to the current week number, as well as the month on the adjacent outer scale. Finally, there’s also a date window placed at 3 o’clock. In line with the more laidback vibe of the watch, the hands and faceted baton indexes are rendered in blackened white gold.

With the steel case, charming concentric dial, and calfskin strap, it’s clear that Patek aimed to make a not-so-stuffy dress watch that fits into the casual chic aesthetic. And the outcome is outstanding.

On this special version, we see the Tiffany & Co. logo placed within the circle closest to the center, right above 6 o’clock, and sitting opposite the Patek Philippe logo positioned in the same circle but under 12 o’clock.

How The Weekly Calendar Works

Powering the Patek Philippe Calatrava Weekly Calendar 5212A is the Caliber 26-330 S C J SE self-winding mechanical movement, made specifically for this reference and based on the famed Patek Caliber 324. The 304-part movement, which is visible through the watch’s sapphire caseback, supplies the watch with 35 to 45 hours of power reserve and operates at a frequency of 28,800 beats per hour.

To indicate the day of the week and the number of the current week, Patek Philippe developed a new semi-integrated mechanism, and a 7-point star on the hour wheel in the center of the movement controls the day-of-week display.

The weeks are numbered in compliance with the ISO 8610 standard, which dictates that the first full week in any year must begin on the Monday of the week of January 4th. This is great news for 2024 as the first day of the year was indeed a Monday. However, depending on when the first Monday falls in any given year, there can be either 52 or 53 weeks (this typically occurs every five or six years), which is accounted for on the watch.

Adjusting the day indicator is done via a recessed pusher in the case flank at 8 o’clock whereas the week number is set using the recessed pusher at 10 o’clock. As is customary, the date and time are corrected by first pulling the winding crown to the correct position and then turning it accordingly. What’s more, Patek Philippe added a fail-safe concept to allow the wearer to make the necessary time and calendar adjustments at any time with no risk to the movement.

In true Patek Philippe fashion, the Patek Philippe Calatrava Weekly Calendar 5212A is both mechanically sophisticated and user-friendly.
