As the “watchmaker of the watchmakers,” it’s hardly surprising that Jaeger-LeCoultre is a master of complicated mechanical watches. Yet, even among the brand’s impressive collection of fine timepieces, its Duomètre models stand out as special creations. In this edition of our Watch of the Month, we take a closer look at the spectacular pink gold Jaeger-LeCoultre Duomètre Quantième Lunaire ref. Q6042422, which combines striking looks and impressive mechanics.

The Duomètre Explained

Jaeger-LeCoultre Duomètre watches are based on the innovative dual-wing movement, containing two independent mechanisms united by a single regulating organ. Within the manual-winding Duomètre movements, there are two mainspring barrels and two independent drive trains.

The first mainspring barrel is dedicated to powering the time while the other serves to power all the other complications the watch may have. Reserving one mainspring barrel just for telling the time reduces amplitude loss and increases timing stability, which in turn results in better accuracy and precision—a constant goal within mechanical watchmaking.

Jaeger-LeCoultre makes several variations of the Duomètre including chronographs, world time, dual time, and as illustrated by this example, a calendar moon phase.

Introduced in 2012, the Jaeger-LeCoultre Duomètre Quantième Lunaire Q6042422 features a 42mm 18k rose gold case. The case is furnished with sapphire crystals on both the dial and caseback and the case measures around 14mm thick. The exhibition caseback allows for an expansive view of that spectacular movement inside the case.

Parts of the beautiful silvered gray-grained dial are also skeletonized for a peak inside. The dial of the watch is the star of the show, featuring a trio of subdials. The subdial at 2 o’clock indicates the hour and minutes, the subdial at 10 o’clock displays the moonphase and date, and the subdial at 6 o’clock is the jumping seconds (also known as flying seconds) indication accurate to 1/6th of a second. The quartet of Arabic numbers on the hour and minutes subdial is classic Jaeger-LeCoultre, as is the blue and gold moonphase disk.

There’s also a central running seconds hand at the center, which sweeps around the dial to point to the seconds track around the periphery. If we zoom in on the pair of cutouts on the dial, we also see two separate power reserve indicators for each of the mainspring barrels, which offer 50 hours of power reserve each.

Jaeger-LeCoultre also added a small “Cal. 381” plaque on the dial, which refers to the movement name. Caliber 381 is a manual-winding movement with 374 components and it beats at a frequency of 21,600 vibrations per hour.

There’s a pusher on the 10 o’clock position on the dial, which serves to advance the pointer-style date. The winding crown is used to wind both mainspring barrels—turning one way winds up one barrel and turning it the other way winds up the other barrel.

The lugs of the watch are welded onto the case and they hold the beautiful brown alligator leather straps. The strap is furnished with an 18k rose gold deployant clasp, which benefits from a push button quick-release system that separates the strap from the buckle.
