Panerai Radiomir Watches Overview

This allows reducing the thickness of the movement without losing any of the important characteristics of all the timepieces manufactured by Officine Panerai. Which are reliability, accuracy, and strength, along with a very masculine and simple to read military-looking design.
Brief History
Giovanni Panerai opens his watch shop in Florence, Italy, in 1860. Becomes the first watchmaker school in the city.
His work ethics and innovation don’t go unnoticed by the Royal Italian Navy, which hires Officine Panerai to design special and specific watches for military use. Especially for the Royal Navy Divers.
Panerai patented the Radiomir in 1916. A radium-based powder that makes the luminescence of the markers and the minute and hour hands easily readable. This being the first of many innovations and patents that Panerai has in its history.
On the brink of the Second World War by 1916. Panerai creates the prototypes of special frogman commando watches and uses the name Panerai Radiomir Watches to describe this very pioneering timepiece.
At the time the issue of visibility for navy divers was of great importance, especially when working with explosives and night missions. That is why Panerai used his patented Radiomir and developed a 47mm case divers watch with a manual movement.
It took two years of testing and reviewing the technical specifications until the full-scale production of the Radiomir prototypes generated the now-famous military-grade watches. They were improved in strength, water resistance, low light visibility, and a larger strap that could be used over the diver’s suit, specially designed to be used in very extreme conditions.
