The Best Luxury Watches Spotted At The Oscars
The Academy Award wrapped up their 91st edition of the Oscars last Sunday, and as expected it was a glamorous affair. Dressed to the nines, celebrities stepped out onto the red carpet ready for Hollywood’s biggest night. However, among the dresses, tuxedos, awards, and jewels, we couldn’t help but notice a serious amount of top-tier timepieces out and about too. Is it just me, or were some men wearing their sleeves a little shorter to show-off their wrist game? Here’s a round-up of some of the best luxury watches spotted at the Oscars.
Bradley Cooper’s IWC Big Pilot

Bradley Cooper, who was nominated for three awards at the Oscars (“Best Actor”, “Best Picture”, “Best Adapted Screenplay”) had on his wrist a one-of-a-kind IWC Big Pilot’s Watch (Ref. IW500923). The famous actor has been an IWC ambassador for a few years now. The watch sports an 18k red gold case, a midnight blue dial, and runs on the automatic IWC Caliber 51111 movement with an impressive seven-day power reserve. What makes this IWC watch unique is the one-off engraving of on the caseback, which takes the iconic quote from Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s “The Little Prince”: “It is only with the heart that one can see rightly“.
Now that Bradley Cooper wore the IWC Big Pilot’s Watch to the Oscars, it will be auctioned off at Sotheby’s in March. Proceeds will be donated to the Antoine de Saint-Exupéry Youth Foundation. The starting bid is set at $ 16,000 and the watch will be accompanied by a personal note signed by Bradley Cooper.
Spike Lee’s Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso

It was a big night for director Spike Lee, who won an Oscar for “Best Adapted Screenplay” for his movie BlacKkKlansman. He was also nominated for “Best Picture” and “Best Director” for the same movie. Spike Lee lept up on stage and hugged actor Samuel L. Jackson before accepting his award. Style-wise, Spike Lee went bold with a purple suit created by Ozwald Boateng and custom gold Jordans. Yet, his choice of wristwear was about as classic as it gets–a Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso.
Those familiar with luxury watch will immediately recognize the iconic rectangular case of the Reverso, which wearers can swivel to show either the back or the front of the watch. Spike Lee’s particular steel Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Classic Medium Duoface Small Seconds includes two distinct dials. The silver dial with blue hands includes hours, minutes, and a seconds subdial, while the black dial with silver-toned hands includes a second time zone and a 24-hour display. Essentially, two watches in one.
Mahershala Ali’s Cartier Santos

Mahershala Ali also won big at the Oscars last week when he took home the Oscar for “Best Supporting Actor” for his role in the movie Green Book (which also won Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay). This is actually his second Oscar in the same category following his win for his role in the movie Moonlight at the 2017 Academy Awards.
For this year’s awards, the award-winning actor wore a fantastic Santos de Cartier Skeleton, released just last year. With a stainless steel case, Mahershala Ali’s Cartier Santos watch houses a skeletonized dial for a view of the open-worked Caliber 9611 MC movement inside the watch. Cartier formed the bridges of the movement to serve as the Roman numeral hour markers sitting beneath the sapphire crystal. As a new Santos, the watch comes with Cartier’s quick-change strap system should Mahershala Ali decide to swap out the metal bracelet for a leather strap.
Rami Malek’s Cartier Tank

Yet another big winner of the night, Rami Malek won the Oscar for “Best Actor” for his portrayal of Freddie Mercury in the movie Bohemian Rhapsody. The actor went for a classic black tuxedo for the evening and accessorized with an elegant Cartier Tank Americaine watch. The Tank watch by Cartier is the Maison’s flagship timepiece and it comes in so many different styles, The Tank Americaine is a long version of the watch with a curvy and graceful profile.
Rami Malek’s Cartier Tank Americaine watch includes a stainless steel case and silver-toned dial, punctuated with plenty of blue accents for a dash of color. There’s the blue stone on the octagonal winding crown, the blue-steel hands, and the navy blue alligator strap. Elegant yet offering plenty of wrist presence, this is a great choice for the young star.

Prior to arriving at the Dolby Theatre, Alex Rodriguez took to his social media platforms to announce that he was nervous to attend his very first Oscars–despite the fact that he didn’t have to do anything there. His main role was to accompany his wife, Jennifer Lopez who was a presenter at the event.
Playing the perfect date, Arod looked sharp in a Tom Ford tuxedo, complete with a crisp white jacket. And to accessorize his Oscar debut look, Alex Rodriguez opted for the ever-favorite Vacheron Constantin Patrimony watch in 18k white gold. He even gave us a glimpse of his Vacheron (along with a Fiftysix model) via an Instagram video. The ultra-slim timepiece measures a well-proportioned 40 mm and houses a simply time-only dial with just a pair of hands and slim indexes. Beautifully understated yet ultra-luxurious.
From Spike Lee’s Reverso to Rami Malek’s Tank Americaine, it’s clear that a top-tier timepiece is a must-have on the red carpet. If you’re looking for the perfect timepiece to wear with your formal wear, browse our selection of pre-owned watches from some of the best brands in the world.
