Pocket Watches
With their rich history, pocket watches have captivated horology enthusiasts for centuries. Originating in the 16th century, these portable marvels were a symbol of refinement and precision, embodying the craftsmanship of skilled watchmakers. Initially, pocket watches were only available to royalty and the exceedingly wealthy. However, technological and design advancements eventually made them more accessible.
The 19th century was the golden age for pocket watches, with renowned watchmaking houses producing intricate, beautifully embellished pieces. These timepieces were not just tools for timekeeping but also symbols of status, destined to be family heirlooms. The advent of the railroad in the 19th century also elevated the importance of accurate timekeeping, leading to the widespread adoption of pocket watches by train conductors and travelers.
Famous Pocket Watches Made by Renowned Watch Brands
The world's most renowned watchmakers like Patek Philippe, Audemars Piguet, Breguet, and Vacheron Constantin have crafted some of the most impressive pocket watches. Here are a few examples:
Breguet Marie-Antoinette Pocket Watch: The “Grande Complication” pocket watch, commissioned for Marie-Antoinette, was only completed in 1827, after the deaths of both the queen and Abraham-Louis Breguet. With nearly a dozen complications, it was the most complicated watch in the world for 77 years.
Patek Philippe Graves Supercomplication: Commissioned by New York banker Henry Graves Jr. in the 1920s, the Graves Supercomplication is a horological masterpiece with 24 complications. It sold for $24 million in 2014, making it the most expensive watch ever sold.
Vacheron Constantin 57260: In 2015, Vacheron Constantin unveiled the most complicated watch ever made – the reference 57260. Crafted from 18k white gold, it has 57 complications and weighs over two pounds.
Audemars Piguet Universelle: Created in 1899, the Universelle is one of the most complicated watches in the world. It features 1,168 components, including 316 screws, and provides 19 complications.
Brands like Breitling, Omega, Longines, and Heuer focused on building precise and easy-to-use pocket watches, often used in the military or for sports timekeeping. Omega, for example, has served as the Official Timekeeper of the Olympic Games since 1932.
Railroad pocket watches, often called "railway pocket watches," were crucial for ensuring accurate timekeeping during rail travel. Several American watch companies produced these watches, including Hamilton, Waltham, Ball, Elgin, and Illinois.
Collecting Pocket Watches Today
Despite the rise of wristwatches in the 20th century, pocket watches continue to charm collectors. Today, these vintage treasures are functional timekeepers and nostalgic reminders of a bygone era, celebrating the artistry and precision of luxury horology.
One benefit of collecting pocket watches is that they are typically less expensive than wristwatches. For instance, buying a Patek Philippe pocket watch is more affordable than buying a Patek Philippe wristwatch.
Used Pocket Watches for Sale
Interestingly, the first pocket watches were not carried in pockets but worn as a pendant around the neck. Early models were oval and lacked a protective glass case. A brass lid attached to the watch could be swiveled open to read the time.
Around 1675, the pocket watch became round and small enough to fit in a pocket. With King Charles II of England setting the trend, pocket watches became a highly sought-after accessory.
Think about how many pocket watches have been made over the years. These were popular for many decades, and many styles came and went. If you want to add this unique style to your wardrobe, consider one made in a previous era. Give this some serious thought because it's a great opportunity.
Don't think of it as used; instead, think of it as a chance to buy a watch with a story. You're buying a treasured antique that may have been carried by railroad executives, telegraphers, and adventurers from a bygone era. New pocket watches may be beautiful, but they lack this interesting history. Plus, you can save money this way.
Getting a Quality Vintage Pocket Watch
Our organization, founded in 1980, committed to quality whether selling new or used merchandise. We ensure each watch meets the highest standards by working with certified watchmakers who have experience with top luxury brands. Buying a used pocket timepiece here is like buying a new one.
Considering the materials used in certain older pieces, some collectors find them preferable. They appreciate antique watches for their materials and patterns popular when these pieces were made. Some of today's models might very well be thought of in the same way.
