Datejust 69173 - Overhaul and Detailing Project
Although they might not be the oldest watch company currently standing, Rolex is definitely the most recognized. Founded in 1905, Rolex has been a well-established brand for over a century.
Looking back, when these watches were first released Rolex only crafted watches specifically for men. This was simply because of the nature of the era. While men were the ones working and maintaining households, they were also the only ones with the money and luxury to buy such timepieces.
Miniscule ladies’ cocktail watches were some of the very few selections Rolex provided women whose interests were sparked by timepieces. These watches were extremely dainty and often resembled a jewelry item rather than a timepiece. Nowadays collectors look for these vintage Rolex timepieces as collectibles rather than an everyday watch; several of these Art Deco style pieces are still being sold around the world.
Now in age, women have been more and more allured to buying larger watches originally designed for men. When browsing through the ‘Women’s Watches’ category on the Rolex page, one will find that there’s still a significant difference between these watches and the standard men’s timepieces. Here, one will mostly find smaller-scale versions of Rolex’s more popular models- usually with some accent diamonds on the face, bezel, bracelet, or all over.
Regardless of size and model, Rolex continues its pristine legacy throughout every timepiece. Whether it be a vintage 26mm Datejust or a brand new 40mm Submariner, Rolex crafts each of their watches to the highest standards known for high caliber Swiss-made watches. The quality of every inventory item is never compromised and meant to last a lifetime if properly cared for.
Caring for a Rolex is crucial to maintaining its working condition. While newer watches are now being advertised for needing maintenance less often, Rolex suggests one never go longer than 3-5 years without giving their Rolex a routine overhaul and detail. Gray & Sons - Top Watch Service Center For High Caliber Watches
The watch repair we will speak on came from a customer who noticed his wife’s Rolex Datejust was no longer keeping time. The exterior of the watch seemed fine, but it was not maintaining power reserve nor would it tell accurate time. There seemed to be minor scratches on the bracelet we knew we could help remove. Every Rolex watch that comes into Gray and Sons Jewelers for repair will automatically receive a 24-month warranty once received by the customer post-repair.
Rolex Datejust Repair
First things first, we open the case back of the watch and look for any rusted or damaged parts that need replacing. Once we’ve diagnosed the problem on the watch and know what extra parts are needed, our watchmaker takes apart the watch piece by piece and prepares it for cleaning.
The movement, crystal, and watch stem are separated from the head and bracelet. The case and bracelet are given to our head polisher while our watchmakers begin working on the movement. Piece by piece, our watchmaker completely disassembles the watch’s mechanism evaluating every piece.
Once the watch parts that need replacing are identified, our watchmaker prepares the standing parts to be cleaned and sources the parts that need to be replaced. We use six different cleaning solutions in an ultrasonic machine to make sure all dirt, dust, and dried oils are extracted from every crevice within the watch parts.
Once the watch parts are cleaned, the watchmaker starts to reassemble the movement while adding lubricants wherever designated and replacing all the gaskets for water resistance. This tedious process usually takes around 1 to 2 hours per watch! Of course, assuming the watchmaker isn’t interrupted and all parts continue functioning.
Once our watchmaker puts together the movement and re-cases the watch, it's time for the final steps of our repair process. Prior to returning the client their watch, we must execute a final quality control process to assure the watch is running as accurately as possible.
In this quality control process, we measure the watch’s amplitude and water resistance. We use special machines to listen to the heartbeat of the watch and simulate a deep plunge using air pressure. With this, we get to hear how well the watch is ticking and check for any leaks around the watch case. If both amplitude and water tests come out well, the watch gets put on our winding wheel for observation where it rotates and mimics the movement of the wrist.
With this machine, we can analyze the power reserve on the watch and make sure the automatic is providing power up to par throughout the day. Our entire repair process usually takes around 3 to 6 weeks total.
