Crystal Replacement REPAIR & SERVICE
Omega
Gray & Sons Jewelers, located in Miami Beach, Florida is an independent watch service center, repairing Omega watches since 1980.
In a mechanical watch, the system that transfers power incrementally from the coiled mainspring to the balance, thus creating a steady “pulse” that advances the time, is called the escapement. The action of this system is what makes a watch’s ticking sound. The lever escapement used by the vast majority of mechanical watch movements was invented in 1755. 225 years later, in 1980, the coaxial escapement was patented. Conceived of as an alternative to the lever escapement, the coaxial escapement reduced the amount of friction between certain critical components. This is intended to increase the accuracy of a watch over time, as well as to increase the interval between necessary services. Omega introduced the first commercial watch using a co-axial movement, the Caliber 2500, in 1999. They have since made a series of modifications and improvements to the design. Servicing a co-axial escapement requires a high level of skill and training. Gray & Sons’ Swiss-trained watchmakers have been educated in the proper way to repair and maintain this special movement directly by the Omega service center. As part of our relationship with them, our watchmakers are invited to receive special training when new products and techniques are developed. Only a few master watchmakers are invited to attend these special Omega factory training classes. Currently, approximately 300 watchmakers globally have received this training.
The key critical component to properly servicing an Omega co-axial movement lies in the correct lubrication of the escapement. Although technically the escapement needs no lubrication, lubricants are used to absorb and offset the shock of components striking each other inside the watch. The manner in which the lubricants are applied is also critical to the correct operation of the movement, and requires specialized training and experience.
