Omega Speedmaster, first watch on the moon, great fit at your wrist
Chronograph movements had been produced since the late 1800s, the Omega Speedmaster was introduced in the market in 1957 and it is the longest produced chronograph to date. A great movement, well designed, and with an attractive look, this timepiece is awesome and very desirable by collectors worldwide.
It became even more popular since this is the watch the Apollo 11 astronauts wore during the first American moonwalk. It is made of stainless steel for strength and endurance. The Omega Speedmaster Professional is one of the few watches that NASA qualifies for spaceflight and it is the ONLY ONE qualified for extravehicular activity: spacewalks, although it was not originally designed for space exploration.
The concept of this watch at its creation was to complete the line with the Omega Seamaster and the Railmaster, offering a chrono and tachymeter watch to consolidate Omega’s position in the chronograph market.
It is important to mention that the Omega Speedmaster’s design with 12 hours subdial and triple register chronograph became the series hallmark.
The timepiece added the *Professional* appellation on the dial in 1964.
In 1968/1969 Omega replaced the movement and started using Calibre 861, but a watch as this one with CALIBRE 321 was the one used by the Apollo 11 mission and it is popularly known as the Pre-Moonwalk even though it was worn on the moon.
It is a great opportunity and an honor to work on such a fine-looking and sought-after watch.
Gray and Sons received the watch from a collector that wanted to make sure we were going to follow manufacturers’ protocols to keep this watch 100% original and properly protect its present and future value. No parts to be replaced, not detailing of the head and bracelet, and not even replacement of the crystal was requested, only a complete service and cleaning of watch and movement.
One of our Swiss watchmakers took the job with great passion, as usual, as we love the intricate movements of a chronograph and appreciate the watch enthusiasts that wear them. A watch like this is a source of infinite pleasure and is always a conversation piece as it does not go unnoticed; it is highly recognizable and appreciated in the watch aficionado circles.
Every movement is different and it is a different challenge to restore and bring to life vintage movements. At Gray & Sons, we make it personal to bring every timepiece back to its original splendor and manufacturer’s specifications.
So, the process begins, the movement is removed. Case, bracelet, and buckle are sent to one of our highly specialized watch specialists to clean the head, bracelet, and buckle without changing the beautiful vintage look of the timepiece making sure that each part of the watch continues to be as original as designed and manufactured in 1967.
Meanwhile, our watchmaker had disassembled the movement to the barest parts. Cleaning the parts using a multi-stage process to remove dirt and old dried lubricants to bring this great movement back to its best performance..
This process takes time to be achieved as no shortcuts are used, we, at Gray & Sons, only do this the old-fashioned painstaking way of the antique watchmakers.
The movement is put together again to start working on the regulation, timekeeping accuracy, power reserve, chronograph functions, and synchronization of all the parts involved for this magnificent movement to keep time.
Then the watch will be re-cased, and for the final checks, two specialists will test the watch for timekeeping and winding, finally pressure testing machines to check for leaks on the seals and gaskets. The watch will be almost ready to be shipped back and as at this final stage, we will have another associate check everything all over again with new eyes and have these final tests done again before we ship it back to the owner.
