Chronograph - Overhaul and Detailing Project
Since 1957, Omega has been recognized worldwide for their excellent watch innovation and iconic timekeeping mechanisms. As the official timekeeping watch brand for the Olympic Games, Omega isolated the ‘Speedmaster’ collection from their Seamaster and Railmaster, and for good reason. This collection quickly gained popularity for its co-axial functionality and tachymeter scale bezel.
The latest models of the Omega Speedmaster are powered by the Calibre 9900 (or 9901 with rotor and bridges made in 18k gold) movement which is one of Omega’s best creations yet. This automatic is equipped with two barrels, a vertical clutch, a column wheel, and better yet, a Co-Axial escapement with an operation frequency of 4 Hz.
The reasoning behind this calibre being the definition of pristine watchmaking is because of the immense testing and quality control these movements go through to be certified by METAS. Omega is independent from METAS, the Swiss Federal Institute for Metrology who are responsible for providing the accurate official time in Switzerland.
While METAS doesn’t directly conduct the testing of movements, they assure that the machines and equipment being used to conduct these tests are of the highest quality and in top condition year-round. METAS even has insisted on Omega providing them an independent office where calibre testing takes place so that they may conduct impromptu tests and inspections on the machinery.

Gray & Sons - Omega Speedmaster Watch Repair - Center For High Caliber Watches
When it comes to providing a comprehensive restoration and enhancement service for high-end watches, Gray & Sons takes pride in executing a meticulous and time-intensive process. Our commitment to excellence ensures that every timepiece sent to us receives the highest level of care and attention to detail.
The journey begins with the careful removal of the watch's case back, allowing us to conduct a thorough inspection for any signs of corrosion or damage that may necessitate component replacement. In this specific instance, the watch requires a movement service due to a lack of good care beforehand.
At Gray & Sons Jewelers, each watch that comes by our collection undergoes an overhaul and detail process. This encompasses the movement, disassembly and servicing of the watch's intricate internal mechanism, complemented by a meticulous cleaning and polishing of its external case.
Once we've identified the precise issues affecting the watch and determined if any replacement components are required, our skilled watchmaker proceeds to disassemble the timepiece, deconstructing it piece by piece in preparation for the restoration.
The movement, crystal, and watch stem are carefully separated from the head and bracelet. The case is entrusted to our skilled polishers, while our dedicated watchmakers commence their intricate work on the movement. Every part of the watch's mechanism is methodically disassembled, with each individual component scrutinized for wear or damage.
Upon identifying the watch parts that demand replacement, our watchmaker carefully prepares the screws, springs, pivots, and plates for cleaning, sourcing any necessary replacement components. We employ a combination of six specialized cleaning solutions in an ultrasonic machine to ensure the thorough removal of dirt, dust, and aged oils from every crevice and component within the watch.
Following the comprehensive cleaning process, our watchmaker proceeds to reassemble the movement with precision. Lubricants are thoughtfully applied where necessary, and all gaskets are replaced to preserve the watch's water resistance.
This meticulous process typically consumes between two to five hours per watch, assuming no unexpected interruptions occur and all components remain in working condition.
While our watchmaker at Gray & Sons expertly tends to the movement, our skilled polisher gently refines the case to eliminate minor scratches and imperfections. Subsequently, the case undergoes a rigorous cleaning in our ultrasonic machine, followed by thorough rinsing and drying.
Once our watchmaker completes the reassembly of the movement and the watch is re-cased, the final stages of our restoration process come into play. Prior to returning the watch to the client, we execute a stringent quality control check to ensure that the watch functions as closely to its original condition as possible.
During this quality control assessment, we employ specialized machines to measure the watch's amplitude, essentially listening to its heartbeat. We also employ a machine that simulates a deep dive using air pressure to assess the watch's water resistance and check for any potential leaks.
Furthermore, we inspect all complications to ensure their full functionality, including the hour, minute, and second hands. If both timekeeping and water tests pass, the watch undergoes a winding and observation process where it rotates and mimics wrist movement for 6-8 hours. Afterwards, the watch is allowed to rest and run for the next 20-30 hours, ensuring that the automatic rotor powering the reserve operates at optimal performance.
This thorough analysis of durability and function ensures that the watch's movement is fully operational and unaffected by any natural irregularities in wrist movements. Our complete restoration process, designed to revitalize and rejuvenate each timepiece to its former glory, can take up to 8 weeks. At Gray & Sons, we are dedicated to preserving the legacy of exceptional timepieces and providing them with a new lease on life.
