Located in such a reputable location, right across the street from the famous Bal Harbor Shops, has brought an amazing clientele through our doors, and we have proved ourselves to be a trustworthy repair center for almost 40 years. Each client has an amazing story behind their valuable watch or piece of jewelry and todays watch is no exception. Today we will visit one of these amazing stories.
Here we have a vintage Rolex Daytona Ref 6265. This amazing piece was produced from 1970 to 1987. This was the last Rolex Daytona manufactured with a smaller case and the Valjoux 727 movement with 17 jewels, before it was later replaced by a bigger size case and Zenith movement. What makes this Rolex Daytona a special, rare piece? If your guess was the dial, then you are CORRECT! This beautiful piece displays the iconic Paul Newman style dial. Another rare addition to this watch is the Reference number. Displaying 6265 between the lugs at 12 o’clock and 6263 inside the back case. This Rolex Daytona serial number 5,58X,XXX puts its production date somewhere around 1978.
This Rolex Daytona came into our store for servicing. Our client was very concern about his watch, especially because of its rarity and value. He trusted Gray & Sons to do an amazing job finding and fixing this problem. After an initial assessment our master watchmaker carefully opened the watch and found that the was broken the ratchet wheel (as you can see from the pictures).
This wheel is part of the winding system on the watch, making it impossible for this watch to be winded. Being this a manual winding watchmaking this Rolex Daytona non-functional. The second issue that this watch had was the need of servicing. This is a standard procedure which Rolex recommends to be done on all their watches every 4-5 years. Once the movement was completely disassembled, the watchmaker places all parts into metal baskets specially designed for our Tempo ultrasonic cleaning machine. During this process the Valjoux 727 movement undergoes a series of powerful vibrations while submerged in strong cleaning solutions. This is a 4 step process that includes a cleaning process and 3 rinsing steps. After the movement is cleaned and heat dried on the last step, the movement is worked on, ensuring proper timekeeping. Most watches require detailing of their case and bracelets but in this particular situation and on most vintage watches, polishing is not recommended as it depreciates the value of the watch. After precise calibration with the help of timing computer and a waterproofing process the watch is ready for our quality control. We need to ensure that the manual winding system on this Rolex Daytona is powering the watch correctly. After our thorough quality control, the watch is ready to be returned to our client backed by our 24 month in house warranty.
