It is interesting and intriguing to work with a vintage watch, more so when the Rolex brand is involved.
It adds more curiosity to see what we discover and what unfolds when we open the case back and check the movement to try to decipher how this timepiece evolved and was created. We held a piece of Rolex history in our hands.
This vintage timepiece has a very interesting story worth the time to read it.
There is so much to learn about how the modern wristwatch developed in a few years from the gentleman’s pocket watch to what we have today, alliances, betrayals, associations temporary or permanent, they all shaped the path into a company's success or demise.
Vintage watches are always fascinating to look at, for the way they were designed and how the manufacturing was done, in many cases by hand or with very low production runs. The ingenuity of the manufacturer and the interest in reaching new standards is always fascinating.
Some parts were outsourced in search of a better/proven quality, or just a better price; others designed and manufactured completelly in-house to keep control of their secrets, and everyone trying to differentiate themselves from the rest of the pack.
A smaller market, a larger world, with difficulties to be able to reach customers and compel them to buy one watch over another.
In this particular vintage wristwatch, we have a good example to understand how watch manufacturers worked at the time: Rolex brand and iconic Rolex crown is clearly seen on the dial, as well as the model Precision over the 6 o’clock seconds sub dial. There is no doubt this is a Rolex manufactured timepiece.
When we open the back case we start to unfold history, we see the famous Dennison Made in England stamp inside the back case.
This would be waffling to an unexperienced watch collector, How come Rolex did not produce the case?
What does this mean?
The Dennison family was heavily involved in the watchmaking industry for a long time.
Aaron Dennison was an important part of the start of the American Waltham Watch Company. Later he left the company and moved to Zurich where he focused on importing watch movements and from there, looking for better business opportunities, he moved to Birmingham, England where he founded a watch case manufacturing company in 1874.
In time it became the Dennison Watch Case Co. Ltd, the largest manufacturer of watch cases throughout Europe, supplying the British military and special expeditions.
Dennison Watch Case Co was a case specialist, manufacturing cases for most major watch manufacturers.
Rolex, Omega, Tudor, Jaeger-LeCoultre, Smith British Watches, etc would buy the cases for their watches from Dennison, and in this particular example, the Rolex Precision, made in the 1950s.
If you own one, most likely this Rolex would carry a Dennison Made in England case.
Dennison at the time supplied the best cases for sports watches, with patents to protect their designs.
Especially for sports watches, Dennison proved time and time again the high quality of their cases to protect the movement inside.
One of Dennison's cases, used on a Smiths Watch got all the way to the top of the world when Sir Edmund Hilary successfully reached the summit of Mount Everest and sent a letter to the Smiths Watch Co stating I carried your watch to the summit”.
All this history makes it a very collectible item, with collectors acquiring watches with Dennison cases as the main reason to collect them.
