Gray & Sons - Tudor Black Bay Watch Repair Service - Center For High Caliber Watches
When we undertake a comprehensive overhaul and detailing service for a watch, it entails a meticulous and time-intensive procedure. Initially, we carefully open the case back to inspect for any signs of rust or damage that might necessitate replacement. In this specific instance, the movement required thorough cleaning and re-lubrication, while the external demanded polishing.
At Gray and Sons Jewelers, each watch we sell undergoes a thorough overhaul and detailing process. This encompasses the disassembly and servicing of the watch's internal mechanism, coupled with the cleaning and polishing of its external case and metal bracelet.
Once we've pinpointed the issue with the watch and determined whether additional watch components are required, our watchmaker methodically disassembles the watch, piece by piece, in preparation for the overhaul.
The watch's movement, crystal, and watch stem are meticulously separated from the head and bracelet. The case and bracelet are entrusted to our polisher, while our watchmakers commence their work on the movement. Our watchmaker systematically dismantles the watch's mechanism, scrutinizing each individual part.
After identifying the watch parts that need replacement, our watchmaker readies the screws, springs, pivots, and plates for cleaning and procures the necessary components. We utilize a combination of six different cleaning solutions in an ultrasonic machine to ensure the complete removal of dirt, dust, and dried oils from every nook and cranny within the watch parts.
Once the watch components have been thoroughly cleaned, the watchmaker initiates the reassembly of the movement. Lubricants are judiciously applied where needed, and all gaskets are replaced to maintain water resistance.
This time consuming process typically consumes anywhere from two to five hours per watch, assuming the watchmaker encounters no interruptions and all parts remain in working order.
As our watchmaker at Gray and Sons meticulously tended to the movement, our skilled polisher lightly polished the case to eliminate minor scratches. Subsequently, the case underwent a thorough cleaning in our ultrasonic machine, followed by rinsing and drying.
Once our watchmaker reassembles the movement and re-cases the watch, the final stages of our repair process come into play. Before returning the watch to the client, we execute a rigorous quality control check to ensure that the watch is operating as close to new as possible.
In this quality control, we measure the watch’s amplitude using special machines that listen to the heartbeat of the watch. We also test the watch’s water resistance with a machine that simulates a deep plunge using air pressure to check for leaks.
Additionally, we check that all complications are functioning fully; in this case the hour, minute and second hands. If both timekeeping and water tests pass, the watch gets put on our winding wheel for observation where it rotates and mimics the movement of the wrist for 6-8 hours. The watch must then rest and run for the next 20-30 hours; this ensures the automatic rotor that powers the reserve is at optimal performance.
Also, with this machine, we can analyze the durability of the watch and make sure the movement is functioning and not startled by any natural jagged movements of the wrist. Our complete restoration process can take up to 8 weeks.
