Gray & Sons Watch Repair Guide

Watch Water-Resistance Ratings Explained

Understand why a watch’s original water-resistance marking differs from its current condition, how activity guidance works, and what testing can show.

A printed rating is not current permission for an activity

It describes a defined test when the watch and seals met specified conditions. Before water exposure, follow the current manufacturer instructions for the exact reference and rely on an appropriate recent test of the individual watch; do not infer swimming, water-sport, or diving suitability from a generic ATM table.

The ATM System (Atmospheres)

Crucial Note: Pressure isn't just about depth; it's about movement. Hitting the water at high speed (like skiing) creates much more pressure than gently resting at the bottom of a pool.

The “Waterproof” Myth

Water resistance is a condition, not a permanent feature. A watch's seals and sealing surfaces can change with age, heat, chemicals, use, opening, impact, and service history.

  • Heat: Hot showers or saunas can expand seals and let steam in.
  • Chemicals: Chlorine, salt water, and even soap can eat away at gaskets.
